Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Generalized Anxiety Disorder From A
Sufferer
Peg Tillman,
Network Coordinator Panic and Anxiety
Connection
We have watched the commercials on television touting different
medications for treatment of GAD.They may depict a man rubbing his neck and complaining
about his tension or a woman taking her irritable mood out on her family. Though
these are certainly symptoms, they cannot touch the reality of actually living
with GAD
It's very difficult to convey
the constant worry about your health, your family, your children; worry that
often stops you from living a full life. How could a commercial possibly express
that you can never relax, never just sit down and watch television, hold a
conversation or listen to good music without jumping up and down or having your
mind race with thoughts instead of concentrating on the event at hand.
A
commercial could never show the tension in the neck and shoulders that never
seems to go away, causing headaches, numbness and back and chest pain. The
tension that is not confined to your neck and shoulders, its throughout the
body, often leaving you feeling sore and stiff day in and day out. The
dizziness, nausea and other stomach ailments that go hand in hand with GAD
cannot possibly be conveyed in a 60 second advertisement spot.
These are just some of the symptoms people with GAD
experience. It's not about a few rough moments, GAD is pervasive and effects
every area of your
life.
If you suspect you have GAD, please see your doctor so
that other physical ailments can be ruled out. Once this is done and a diagnosis
of GAD has been made, there are medications. therapies and support groups such
as Panic and Anxiety Connection that can help you take your life back.
